Contentedness

He was happy
He saw others smile, and it warmed his heart
The men, women, and children of his town
All spreading the seeds of contentedness amongst the population

Time passes, and the tides of time ravished what was once a happy child
He saw what the world was
He knew what he had to be
And he continued to smile

He saw others smile, and was disgusted
No one could be happy
It was an anomaly to him, how people had real smiles in this world
And through his contentedness grew contempt

Contentedness is a disease
Few have it
And there naivety acts to scorn those who can not comprehend it
Because contentedness is a disease, and it will kill us

He took a stand and spread his truths
But quickly found what he thought to be true was subjective
And he gave up his efforts
Because like us all he was caught in a current, the tide weathering his enthusiasm for change

He gave up his ideals for a tie
And the spark that had shown through his eyes now mistaken for condescension
To think, to question, and dis-contentedness no longer acted as a staple of his being
But as a means to become distanced from those around him

He became aware of that gap
The way others saw him
And the ways he saw them
Contentedness had died through the years, and to us all it became a poison

No one can truly be happy
The idea of it in and of itself an anomaly
We become what we see others as
And contentedness becomes a disease

We all sit around, and distract ourselves, while right before our eyes our government becomes a congress of war criminals, and people are straight up dying because of it. Something's wrong and no one can do anything, because we're all too content with our lives the government is giving us
