Common Sense

The first time that I saw you
I thought that nothing’d ever come of it, no
But this time
We’ll see the sun implode into night
We’ll see the cows jump over the moon
Like all the fairy tales say they do.
We’ll see the stars come out and dance
We’ll just be sitting there - me and you

The city’s alive!
With all the lights and the crowds
I think I’m singin’ too fast -
Got my head in a tailspin now

I’ll give you my heart
I’ll give you my love
I’ll throw in some common sense just because
I lost most of it when I first met you.
I’ve nothing to say
My words ran away
They took my drive away just as well
I guess it’s really better to be safe than sorry…

This may be another story of hearts, hope, and hell
Every sign you show me says that things aren’t going well
I wanna know
What it’s like to be hurt
To be kicked
To feel used
To feel noticed
I need the sting of a busted lip
Of a broken arm
Sound the smoke alarm

Is this everything you thought it would be
Bright night sky’s too intense for me
Working my way through another broken heart
And you didn’t help at all.
Safe or sorry?

All eyes are on you
My stare is fixed to
The way that you move, what you do to me
I can’t believe I’m going through this again
My speech disappeared
Thanks to you, it’s not here
But now I’m hurt, and now I’m used, and now I’m noticed, though
Now I know it’s better to be safe than sorry.
I’ve nothing to say
I’ve nothing to say…

Fun fact: the original title for this song was, "All the Common Sense I've Wasted." This is old as BALLS; it was from junior high, when I used to write songs based on things I hadn't really gone through. I used to write a ton of songs about heartbreak when I was never even in those situations. I just liked to tell stories.
