lake michigan

lake michigan crashed into its farthest corner
and leapt up at us with nimble freshwater fingers
it met the black sky
with ripples and waves
far beyond the pinpoint horizon

i felt the cold dunes of the lakeshore
tracing the roof of his mouth with my tongue

i knew how the water would taste
(if we jumped in, together)
if it filled up our mouths
and rose in our throats
