Lost In The Milky Way

I memorized you from head to toe,
like an astronomer memorizes the constellations
in all corners of the night sky
from every brown freckle on your body,
to the scars that tattooed your wrists
and when you shot me that crooked smile,
my heart dropped like an oncoming comet

The way your chest rose and fell as you slept,
the gentle laughs that vibrated your chest
but even know I tried with all my might,
I never discovered the keys to unlock,
all those thoughts floating in your mind
or figured out those feelings that made
blood coarse through your veins

I never grasped everything you hid,
I wanted to see the hard drive to your brain
why you did the things you did,
like chanting those three words to me,
and promising life together till we were,
merely apparitions floating in the afterlife

I wasted the time I had left with you,
not figuring out why the stars didn't align
and when I looked back over to you,
you were light-years beyond me,
gone, just like a shooting star
