They Say She's Beautiful

They say she’s beautiful
Like its an excuse
An excuse to overlook any pain
Nothing is wrong
With a face like that
That smile is all we need
And they walk away,
Leaving her alone.
Do you know what she does then?
Her stomach curls,
And her nails clutch wrists
Promises kept to their limit
But gut wrenching sobs
Guiltily expressed
come out
And she hates herself
For this
For weakness
And she hates herself
For beauty
And she hates herself
And no one knows
Because beauty stands alone
Where others create distance
In a feigned existence
Of okay.

I haven't shared this with almost anyone else. It was very emotional for me to write, and also hard to think about the place I was in when I wrote it. I've felt this way many times. Perhaps it is way I am so against being seen as a "woman", at least in the way that women are supposed to be seen in modern society. Patriarchy still exists, and we support it. We don't always support each other.
