Share the Silence

“The silence is mine,”
Said her icy eyes.
“Well that’s just fine,”
Replied my heavy sigh.
“No I’m serious this time,”
Said her furrowed brow.
I flashed her a smile.
She’s gonna break. Can’t be long now.
But I noticed her resolve strengthen
In the flare of her nose.
And the drawn out silence lengthened.
For how long? Who knows?
Neither of us were talking,
In this stupid silent treatment “game.”
And just as I was about to get to walking,
I noticed that something changed.
“Why do you hurt me?”
Said the tear on her cheek.
“When I love you so dearly
And so true and complete?”
“Don’t speak!” yelled my pride.
But I threw it away.
And the words on my lips cried:
“I’m sorry. I love you. Always.”
But we didn't let the silence depart.
It only seemed fair
That while she smiled with her head on my heart,
We decided the silence we’d share.
