before anything else happens, the general leads the recruits into a room where there is one window. the window has venetian blinds over it that is blocking out the light. the thing is though, this room is not on the side of the building, this is a room in the center of the building. the light that is being blocked out is not the sunlight, it is artificial. the recruits are told not to be influenced by anything that they are feeling or thinking before the general asks them questions that he has memorized. he asks each recruit the same set of ten questions. the recruits try to answer the questions calculatingly. they try to answer the questions without being influenced by how they are feeling or thinking. the general does not care about their answers. he is more concerned with the movement of their eyes. he is more concerned with the only window in the room. he is more concerned with his own feelings and thoughts.
