Beyond Two Souls

Beyond two souls there is escape.
It’s deep and dark. I feel my way
My hands, clammy, from the cool rock.
I will fight for my life. Nothing they say
Will EVER stop me. I am strong.
I am determined to break my chain.
The echo of clanging doors shakes my cell,
The tink, tink, tink of keys is my pain.
I wait, shrinking into the shadow.

Beyond two souls there is freedom.
I see light, it shines brightly.
My face, warm, my hands, soft.
No. I’m still here, Trapped.
Unable to move, unable to breathe. I cough’d,
A gasp. He watches me, unwavering, his iron club
Brushes against the bars of my cage, tapping.
I shiver. My stick of hope, a stub.

Beyond two souls there is hope.
His shadow moves away, I can relax.
My wrists, burning from the chain that binds me.
I wait, knowing they cannot control me. I am free.
My eyes, drifting shut, I sleep.

Beyond two souls there is rest.
Heavy footsteps thump, my prison doors moan.
My eyes fly open. I am roughly dragged out of my cell.
Another throws me down, onto cool stone.
I cry out, the door slams shut.
I am alone.

Beyond two souls there is light.
An open window beckons me.
I drag myself across the cold floor.
I grab the window, pulling myself through.
I feel the grass tickle my nose, hear wind across the moor.
I worm my hands out of my rusted chain.
I rub the dirt off my infected wrists.
I am free, I have no pain.

Beyond two souls there is recompense.
My shoulders are lifted off the ground,
NO! I shriek. I am yanked back.
He binds my arms, I cannot move
I can only see and feel...black.

Beyond two souls there is revenge.
Pain. Horrible pain. Wet, sticky, blood.
I open my mouth, but only a whine escapes.
I fall, retching up blood, dirt, and mud.
I bend over, my knees hitting the ground.
He looms over me, shiv dropping to the earth
He yanks my hair, without thought or sound
I lash out, the only energy I have left spent.
He doubles over, the shiv wedged in his body.
“FOOL.” I spit. “I AM FREE. YOU CANNOT CONTROL ME.”

Beyond two souls, there is LIFE.
