Blue Hyacinth

The room was empty, save for two,
Two women chatting as girls do,
And while the younger gave a clue,
The older’s smile only grew.

“It’s good to hear you’ve been so well,”
The older told the young Adele.
“I worried for you for a spell;
It’s good that you’re not one to dwell.”

“I did love him with all my heart,
But now I know it wasn’t smart,
To marry ‘fore our lives did start;
We’re simply better off apart.”

The older nodded her assent.
She knew just what her daughter meant.
And even though the time’d been spent,
She was glad her daughter was content.

“And how is school? How are your grades?”
“They’re good, Momma, I’ve A’s in spades.
I’ve got a class on the Crusades,
It’s your old friend, Lucille Kincaid’s.”

“Oh, Lucille!” her mother cooed,
Instantly in a better mood.
“Make sure, before classes conclude,
You tell her that Eve’s book debuted.

“She’d like to hear about old Eve,”
The woman wanted to believe.
“And tell your father, when you leave;
He’d want to know what she achieved.”

“I will, Momma,” the daughter said,
As she went to nod her head.
“I’ll do it now; I’ll get ahead,
Before the traffic gets widespread.

“I love you, Mother; now goodbye!
Sometime next week, I will drop by.”
She walked out to the room nearby,
Waved her hand to her little guy.

He stood and ran up to her, then,
Asked her the same question again.
“How’s Grandma doing? How’s she been?
And -- wait! -- I’ll get to see her, when?”

“I’m sorry, Baby; I don’t know,
Just when you’ll get to say hello.
Your Grandma’s sick, she’s feeling low.
I know that she misses you, though!”

Just how was she supposed to say,
His grandmother was gone today,
And in her place, a younger Mae,
Who lived near twenty years away?

She didn’t know that he’d been born,
That for his grandfather they’d mourned.

She didn’t know that years that passed,
Since Adele had graduated last.

Or that her divorce hadn’t cleared,
That their love had reappeared.

She didn’t know Eve’s book had sold,
Had as a movie, then been told.

But Adele refused to be mean,
Made no mention of those lost scenes.
