Dream Within a Dream

The sound of joyous laughter
Is carried by the breeze,
No bigger worry in the world
Than the bruises on our knees.

We laughed and we played,
And we ran all day
And all it took was a mother's kiss
To take the hurt away.

We cried over spilled milk,
And about our broken crayons,
About no dessert after dinner,
And the little fights with our friends.

We made best friend journals
With drawings, pictures and more.
We made promises for forever,
Not knowing what was in store.

We thought that our relationships
Were stronger than the atom's bond,
But when hardship struck our lives
Those friendships were soon gone.

Now there is a distance between us,
This rift that life has made.
We long to be close again,
But watch as our love fades.

And now I long to return
To this much simpler scene,
But it has become nothing more
Than a dream within a dream.
