The average apartment in America
is about seven hundred square feet.
That sounds like plenty of room, until

One day it doesn't; the white walls
(because the walls are always white)
press in on you and you begin to see

Faces in the mirror that don't belong
to you or anybody and the floor begins
to constantly trip you up until you've
memorized the taste of beige carpet

And the longer you're in those same
seven hundred square feet, the more
the windows have faces too.

They look like your reflection when you
pass them at night but they're only
strange eyes laughing and soon

The sky looks more like home
than home ever has, and home feels
more like drowning than the river
your street leads down to ever will.
