Lilt of Life

This heart was born
Without a scratch,
Beating strong;
But life now leaves this heart
Weather worn,
For betrayal and loss
Leave this heart
Broken, battered,
And torn.

Because of secrets kept
My heart has wept,
And promises shattered
Have left the pieces
Of this broken heart scattered
Among the ruins
Of loves and friendships long past.
Not much longer
Can this battered heart last.

For now this heart
Has danced to the lilt of life;
The dangerous,
Deadly lilt of life;
The hurtful,
Harmful lilt of life.
A dance that never ends well
Between my heart and life,
One that has consistently ended
In tremendous strife.

The hope for something good
Won’t last long.
The hope for something good
Can no longer keep me strong.
Strong enough to keep along
With this horrible,
Harmful lilt of life;
For this heart is weather worn.
Betrayal and loss have left this heart
Broken,
Battered,
And torn.
