To the Edge of Nowhere

While the wind is shrieking and your hand is in mine
We try to run but are surrounded on every side
Hearts in our throats and our lungs by our knees
We slice up the dirt and we bury the trees.
And we all have read about the world shivering
Made friends with the cold and abandoned the Spring
The sun is a myth and the leaves all have died
Destroyed every hope, but we still have our pride.
The Jabberwock protects us all on this night
His roar is gentle and without any fight
He follows our journey and watches us breathe
Keeps us alive for as long as we plead.
The world is too loud for the stars to hear us
No one to help and the clouds are now dust
Those who remain all refuse to let go
The ones who have left already know...
I’m with you, beside you, in this strange land
If Icarus can’t make it, what chance do we stand?
Our wings have been lost for a million years
The light of our fluttering thoughts bring me to tears.
Our fingers are burning as we swallow the air
Dragging ourselves to the edge of nowhere
Peering over the edge and down into the dark
We drop our shoulders and exhale in sparks.
