Beautiful Creatures

When I say the word, "firefly," what do you see? Look beyond this moment. Do you see a campfire? Or an old mason jar with holes in the top? Do you see stars that God made tangible for us? Or perhaps you see a small light in the darkness.

When I was a kid, I spent my summer chasing fireflies. I followed star after soaring star until I eventually lost sight of their glimmer. After, when I was left there in the darkness, I realized how far from home I had wandered. When their light was within my reach, I didn’t see how far out of my comfort zone I was stepping because those little sparkling lights were my definition of beauty in the darkness.

When the morning came, however, the fireflies were often forgotten. See, when the sun rises, they don't seem to be anything more than beetles. In the day, they don't look special. No one looks at them with awe. People forget what the fireflies were hours before daylight spilled over the horizon. People forget what they still are, even though you don't recognize them. Their beauty is still there; they haven't changed, but people won't look closely enough to see that.

So, Katie [StaticWolfGirl], what's your point?

My point is: Christ and His followers are often treated like fireflies: beautiful creatures, meant for a purpose, that shed light on the lost when darkness surrounds them. When the lost are in such a dark place that they can't see the sun, we are there to comfort them. We show them love and lead them out of their comfort zones so that when their lives turn around again, they might remember us fondly for the warmth we shared.

Sure, we aren't always noticed. When the darkness fades, we may be forgotten and treated just like everyone else, but our beauty is still there, even if no human detects it because God can still see His light shining through our lives, even when we, ourselves, forget our purpose.

So be patient, my fellow fireflies, and wait for the night. The world will recognize your beauty when the light goes out
