Under the Calm

Enter the incision in my chest,
follow the pain until you reach the spot where my heart is breaking.
There you will find an emptiness like the hollow of a great tree,
an absolute nothingness like the immense nothingness of space,
uninhabitable of life, love and warmth.
Peel back the facade that is my life and see the depressed tormented spirit that dwell beneath the skin,
the darkness of a thousand shadows entombing me.
A flow of blood escapes me,
the cold touch of metal against flesh.
A reminder that hurt and pain is the way of the world,
where death is the ultimate wake-up call.
I hope to wake up soon...
