Comforting Darkness

Beady black eyes watch me as I sleep
They only hang around to listen to my screams
Teasing me, interrupting my beautiful fantasy
Turning it into a vivid nightmare
As I wake
Sputtering for breath
Skin downright clammy
Clutching the covers so very tightly
Reality hits, hard
But I’m glad
Because
I relish the darkness
Guzzling it like a dehydrated barbarian
It comforts me
And for a moment I feel carefree
Allowed to bask in the quiet moonlight
