Ballad of a Ghost

When Death came upon you, you smiled.
A cynical smile, but all the same.
Death took your hand, and led you up the staircase,
Only for a hole to open up under the ivory.
You fell through, landing back on the ground.
The ground in which you died.
In the house, trapped,
To haunt for an eternity.

Everything washed out a simple white.
You saw your family’s reaction to your body laying there,
Tears rolling down their face,
And you couldn't help, but shed a ghostly tear of your own.
There was no color in this ghostly land.
If you tried to walk out the door,
You were held back almost like there was a fence.
In the house, trapped,
To haunt for an eternity.

Your family left to move away.
They hated that spot where you were.
Ignored, sitting on windowsill, alone,
The house was empty, no patrons at all.
All you could do was haunt and haunt.
Kids broke in and vandalized the place.
Nothing you could do…. You were frozen.
In the house, trapped,
To haunt for an eternity.

Years passed and you stay the same.
An angry spirit growing day by day.
The house falling into shambles.
Broken windows, door torn off the hinges, house raided.
A flower growing up between the boards.
You scream in agony though no one can hear.
In the house, trapped,
To haunt for an eternity.

You sit in the attic, all alone.
Darkness in the night.
You grab some wires, tearing them out,
A spark hitting the wood.
Fire spread in mere seconds,
Consuming the entire house.
You smile the same cynical smile that held your face when you died.
This is your escape, your freedom,
A way out of this cursed life.
You think you're no longer,
In the house, trapped,
To haunt for an eternity.

Firefighters couldn't save the remains,
All that is left is smoldering ash.
The concrete foundation is under your feet,
And you know there’s no turning back.
You wait to see the white light again,
With Death standing there.
Nothing happens though,
You’re the only one there.
The song remains the same for you,
There isn't anything to change.
In the ash, trapped,
To haunt for an eternity.
