And I Embrace Them
In a home movie we laugh
We tease each other, we goof around
Blissfully ignorant
Ignorant to the fact that two years time will see us separated
There we are
With skinned knees and muddy shoes
The glory days of me and you
Back when it was just us two
An inseparable pair
The memories bring both joy and pain
And I embrace them
Four years in the future
We don't talk often, you're far away
Terribly distant
Distant, and thinking of each other only from time to time
There we are
We dance across the TV screen
Shaded by our climbing tree
And now you're smiling back at me
Through a window into the past
The memories bring both joy and pain
And I embrace them
We tease each other, we goof around
Blissfully ignorant
Ignorant to the fact that two years time will see us separated
There we are
With skinned knees and muddy shoes
The glory days of me and you
Back when it was just us two
An inseparable pair
The memories bring both joy and pain
And I embrace them
Four years in the future
We don't talk often, you're far away
Terribly distant
Distant, and thinking of each other only from time to time
There we are
We dance across the TV screen
Shaded by our climbing tree
And now you're smiling back at me
Through a window into the past
The memories bring both joy and pain
And I embrace them

I wrote this poem after watching a home video I made several years ago with one of my very best friends. Not long after we made that movie we found out he'd be moving to Kentucky. He was my best friend for a good part of my childhood, and yet now I talk to him very little. I was thinking about that and it inspired me to write this.
