A Deep Remembrance

A shade of blue coats the air
I think I enjoy the way it feels. But do I?
Breathe it in, breathe it out, not a care
The tunnel opens and beckons me. But should I?

Raise a hand to your face
A drained look in your eyes
All I know of you, to be erased
No longer anyone behind my eyes

I would love to see the sky
While I’m saying my goodbyes
“I will return and steal you away with me.”

Because I know that’s all you’ve wanted
Since I told you I am haunted
By the ghosts of things that never came to be

I have no repentance for things never present
Or for regrets that I don’t have, or things that I resent
Only a deep remembrance for all I loved and hated
And for anyone I wronged, and the happiness I’ve created

The universe may not blink, but I do
Like to think that you’ll be saddened by my absence.
Hell hath no fury like the nothing that lies ahead
I love you, and I hope that lends some credence

To your memory of me, please
Stay fresh within her mind, until the end
When she can meet me again, farther down the road
In a beautiful place no one can see, just around the bend

Every second I take
To stare at you
Reminds me of all that I have left to fix

Despite that, you have
Inspired all of the joy
That became of my life, unlike the leaving it

All around, life goes on
Merely a drop
In a very wide and very deep pond

I plummet, weighed down
By my mistakes, but still afloat
From the opportunities I dared to take

With a growing sense of finality
And a firmer grasp on reality
I walk the path of what some call righteousness

When you come to find your peace
Meet me there, so we can leave,
Together, our small world of finiteness

I have no repentance for things never present
Or for regrets that I don’t have, or things that I resent
Only a deep remembrance for all that I loved and hated
And for anyone I wronged, and all the happiness I’ve created

The universe may not blink, but I do
The universe may be unable to care, but I can
The universe may not think, but I do
The universe can’t return your stare, but I can

And I will return, in time,
To steal you away with me
