Larsen Trap

LARSEN

It sat in the field not far from here
A cube of mesh
Something I wasn’t aware of, ever
Pondering too when walking past
Today answers come along like two buses

Corvus, two magpies exactly
Jumping about in their chambers
Wishing again to be free
It’s a Larsen trap. Wooden frame
With a spring bolted door
A crow or magpie would be placed inside
Enticing another and another
To fall in

The gamekeeper would be able to count songbirds

For months the empty one not far from here
Had me stumped
Now it looks so simple an answer
Like most things in life when worked out
Long divisions, ironing boards, petrol strimmers
