Los Lobos- An Island

Greeting us at the shore you were a short brave hop
From the tourist boat to a safe and solid ground.
Scattered earth-bellied strewn rock
In disarray you tie yourself together
With dull dusty straps of road
And lead us to your innards, chaotic and brimming
With sandy toweled beaches, bellies and wrappers.

I cannot accept this hive.

We step off track where ice-creams melt and
Spot the sleek local youth dive
Into a footprint surrounded lake.
A charming hut houses sunshine
History.

We ramble over discarded sand and scraped rock
Moved by the ferocious shifting winds and find
The heroic Ocean magnificently roaring.
In defiance I smother its seraphic demeanor,
Saluting its power; I seek another way.
Turning to another beautiful thundering
Adventure.

Sauntering down a decline I ask her to wait,
I will find the reason we have come.
From behind a mound of rock
I see it!
A lagoon so beautiful and simple.
I squint at perfection in paradise and call her to me.
She comes.

The tide soon drags the locals in

I leave her on the golden scratchy sand and
Fall into foot high shallows.
She laughs and touches the rolling ripples
Knee deep now in a salty lagoon.
I lay still with my eyes closed
While slopping waters fill my ears.

Pelagic waves slam our surrounding black volcanic fort.
I need hear nothing more.

Los Lobos is a volcanic island which lies off the coast of Feurtaventura of the Canary Islands. The island at one stage was home to sea lions although not for two hundred years.

It is the closest thing to paradise I have found. Tourism on the island leads to crowding in places though Los Lobos offers amazing isolated nooks and crannies. The rush of the ocean can be heard from most points.
