Daises

starts with a hello
a friendly smile
from one hopeful face to another.
just two bright kids with brought souls
looking for a friend in the big crowd
wanting to be loved.

continues on the playground
spending lunch breaks laughing and playing,
begging to sit next to each other in class.
sharing secrets and dreams,
the sister I never had.

things become different in high school,
where one best friend
becomes a big group of boys and girls.
late night chats about the boys we liked
and the makeup we wanted to wear,
you were still always there for me.

as we grew from adolescents to teens,
we changed.
alcohol hazed parties, tight dresses, kissing boys
and endless stress over practice papers.
even when tragedy struck,
i was still there for you.

things got tense,
and i still don’t understand how.
but people change, and feelings don’t stay the same.
its strange how
people so close
can just
drift apart.
few words here and there,
and then silence.

soon i’ll forget your birthday
and you’ll forget the colour of my eyes.
soon you will forget the late night confessions
and i’ll forget the words you said to me when my dad died.
the years will pass,
and we will make new friends,
live new lives.

our friendship was a daisy chain,
bright, pure,
and full of life.
it was forged over 13 years,
each year more flowers blossomed.
but as all life does,
the daisies died,
turned to dust,
and were forgotten about eventually.
