Self-conscious

Lanky guy; black curly hair, brown-green eyes
Girls had crushes on him, but relationships never lasted long
Skinny as a rail, tall as a tree
People said he had his family's lucky genes
The hair though... The hair was a curse, an obsession
Perfection of it was key for him
It was never perfect in his eyes though
Self-conscious at the age of fifteen

Short girl; brown hair, green-silver eyes
Wanted to find love, but always faltered
She stuck to abusive or long distance relationships that caused her pain
Chunky, fat, bitch whore; names all the same
Best friends, a tiny silver blade and some long sleeves
She wanted to be pretty
The mirror was an image of ugly though
Self-conscious at the age of fourteen

Biology class, fourth period; her freshman year, his sophomore year
He in the front, she in the very back
By chance, they became lab partners
For her, love at first sight
He dated a girl for two weeks that December
By that January, the end of the semester, they knew something was there
Neither would admit it
Self-conscious, now knowing how the other would react

February; both of them still alone
By chance, she'd heard a rumor that he was looking for her
A mutual friend spread her message to him.
March fifteenth; he had her number in his hands
Not knowing what to say to her, many drafts of unfinished sentences
It was a Friday night and she was with her family a dinner
He texted her finally and asked her out an hour later while she stood next to the cheese at the grocery store
Self-conscious and together

December 2014; her junior year, his senior year
One year and nine months have went by
He, a gamer, still worried about his hair
She, a writer, appearance still everything
The flaws don't matter to one another though
They've planned their future together, not wanting anyone else
They help subdue each others insecurities
Jeremy and I, self-conscious, but in love
