Bare Branches

I’ve got freckles like constellations
Your scars are pale moonlight through clouds
We’ve got veins like tributaries;
Stupid thoughts ricochet off my skull.
You say that you feel connected
Alive
I say I feel so small
So human.
We’re immortal, you laugh
And I play along
A moment of infinity high.
The bruises are blossoming flowers
The rattle of bones like dry leaves
We pretend like nothing is changing
Everything is a wilderness song.
The whistle of wind through bare branches
Not unlike your exhale through stained teeth
The crash of the waves from the ocean
The same sound you make falling to bed.
So go ahead, tell me you’re fine
I’ll wipe away tears from your eyes
I listen to lies like bowed branches
Creaking and waiting to break.
