I Can't Grow Up
Just imagine being
pulled along in a Radio Flyer
grass stains from too many hand stands
failed ones if we’re counting but anyway
searching for constellations to name
if I had to choose I’d say
that Orion is my favorite, like me he hunts
the stars.
*
Making cities from
some wooden blocks and Lincoln Logs
blanket forts
are not
made for rain
but I guess we learn the hard
way
and we set up a tarp in the backyard
to make it feel like we’re really camping.
*
The night light
is supposed to keep monsters away
the things in my room cast
shadows
holding the flashlight under the covers as a warning
to the creatures under my bed
“I won’t be afraid of you.”

A few short poems, from a set of poems I was working on that reminisce on childhood.
