The Friendzone

At the age of fifteen
I arrive back to the village with worry
What will your reply be?
What will you tell me?

I told him we need to speak
He showed up at my gate
And my legs got weak

We took a stroll and sat down on a bench
Where I struggle for words, stutter and clench
I asked about the letter and what his thoughts are
He started saying things I saw from afar

Told me all the reasons
Why we can't and we shouldn't
But still answering the question he wouldn't

On our way back I look him straight in the eye
"Do you like me or not?" And his reply?
A look past his shoulder avoiding eye contact
A one word answer in which emotion lacked

Went back to his front garden
And he went upstairs
As he left, a lonely tea rolled down my face
He returned with a smile and walked me home
I guess luck isn't for everyone it's only for some
