The Moon

I remember the moon that night
I remember standing at my back door waiting for my dog, while looking up at that glowing Cheshire cat grin hanging suspended in a blue-black sky
I remember the speckling of silver stars
I remember the frozen breeze dancing through onto my skin, swirling around my bare ankles
I remember my breath coming out in white puffs
I remember the sound of the washer mixed with my moms laughter
I remember reluctantly turning in as my dog came running up to me, tail wagging.
And I remember the moon...

There was nothing spectacular about that night. No life changing event took place but...
I remember standing there, looking up, thinking 'I will remember this'
I remember thinking this moment of blissful normal will someday wrap around me like a blanket when it all changes. I will look back on this moment and whisper 'you were everything'

I remember looking over my shoulder once more before retreating into the warmth
And I remember the moon smiling down at me.
She knew... She always knew...
