My First Hospital Stay

My first hospital stay was as frightening
As the demented monsters
That hung out under my bed at the time.
The walls were as white as ghosts
And the anesthesia smelled like a public school’s bathroom.
I walked around with eye patches like a pirate,
But instead of one,
I had two.
My vision was as black as the ink of a pen for a week.
When my eye patches were off,
My eyeballs looked like red tomatoes
And my eyes were as swollen as a puffer fish.
Even though the meals tasted like spoiled milk,
The ice cream was as savory as the ice cream
From your favorite local ice cream shop.
