What He Couldn't Save

He once had a dream that
She had fallen into an abyss, her arms outstretched
And as she cried out

She had died sometime prior

Quietly, she accepted her fate
The illness she suffered was much too severe
She never woke up

He was left behind, haunted by her passing

She was young, most certainly
Practically a child, for all sakes and purposes
And illness took her away

He fought and searched in vein for a cure

Yet, it became all too late

Her illness progressed
And it was explained that she wouldn’t have long
She fell asleep soon after

Days passed and she never seemed to awake

Her life was what couldn’t be saved
He had lost so much and
Now he remains full of regret

Her life wasn’t the only thing he couldn’t save

He wanted so much to make it up to her
Yet, she had fallen ill as he was working out how
She never truly knew

Their bond was damaged, seemingly beyond repair
Now, it was beyond too late
She had passed on

Without a cure,
He could only sit by her side as
She quietly slipped away

She didn’t even notice he was there

Ever since, she still lingered
In memory and in spirit, almost near eternally
Bound in to this world

He feels her there, watching silently
And he misses her terribly, forevermore plagued
By a recurrent nightmare

He was too late

Memories of her came flooding back,
Bittersweet memories like the photographs
Taken a long time ago

A painful reminder of what was

And what he couldn’t save
