Promise

This has been hell,
I swear to you.
It's all gone down hill
and there's nothing I can do.
I'm lost now,
but I'll find my corner.
I miss you,
maybe tonight I'll call you.
After all the pain wares out
and the poison sets in.
When my breath freezes over,
and my blood is still beneath my skin.
I'll think of you,
with my dying thought.
I'll curse a war
that was never fought.
'Hear me,' I'm begging.
'Help me,' I pray.
'When all else leaves,
promise you'll stay.'
You pick up the phone,
I whisper, I say,
"You promised me one thing,
why didn't you stay?"
