Swim

It was the night
We both knew that you
Would have to say goodbye,
So we held tight

To the past.
Forced some memories,
We swore that they would last.
(A bit too fast.)

Who would have known you would stray so far?
You left your sunglasses in my car...

I ran away.
Packed up my backpack,
Tried my best to seize the day.
I couldn't stay.

I tried not to care.
Ignored the calls, got a tattoo,
And cut my hair.
It wasn't fair.

So hard to forget,
Yet so slow to remember.

I threw your sunglasses into the Mississippi River.

I'll always be the one who's left behind,
But I don't mind.

If where your going is half as fake
As where you've been.
So if you need those memories,
Swim.
