Immortality

Death gifted me a watch,
It told me when I’d die—
The second hand was generous
Every time I cried.

Slyly, I turned back the clock,
I just could not accept it—
Death was not surprised,
It was what he had expected.

I never let it get too close—
I never let it slide—
I kept it ticking with at least
A decade on my side.

Death was quite a clever man—
He never gives for free—
I could not stop obsessing
Over immortality.
