The Vision of Catastrophe

somehow i knew you’d break my heart.
from that first breath,
when you said my name.
from the first moment,
when your fingers danced through the air,
as you said your piece.
i knew what you’d do to me.
it was like i was given a glimpse
into the future of you and me.
it was a long road trip,
beginning in the crowded cities,
where i stared up through the windshield,
up at the sky,
up at nothing.
and as we rode on,
the streets grew narrow,
like the distractions,
and the city lights faded in the distance.
and as the stars lined the horizon,
i saw the milky way,
and you saw me.
and we laughed and sang,
danced and screamed at the heavens
until we reached the ocean
and had nowhere else to go.
a new city came to light,
and the stars faded from sight.
i turned my head to smile,
to tell you we’d made it,
but you were looking at the sea,
waiting for something better
to break the surface.
the stars are lonely in the city,
just like me.
