These Long Drives
When I was a baby,
my mother would put me in the car in the middle of the day,
and drive aimlessly to make me sleep.
When I was a baby,
my father would put me in the car in the middle of the night,
and drive aimlessly because I would not sleep.
I’m a big girl now,
and my mother doesn’t love my father any more,
and I don’t think I do either.
But I still grow sleepy in cars because some things never change.
