A Fee Trip to Paradise

"hello, my friend
have you missed me?"
hardly, you just visited yesterday
"but a lot can happen in a day"
sitting on my shoulder, unsettling
always baring a wicked grin
that makes my stomach churn
creeping in closer and closer every passing day
growing like the panic in my veins
ready to sell, sell, sell
sell me an offer I couldn't possibly turn down
"come with me, I'll take you to paradise"
won't take no for an answer
leans in with compelling whispers
dreary words of sweet relief
emerging from the darkest caves of my mind
that hide a secret longing
"come on, you know you want to"
I swallow the lump in my throat
with the snapping of fingers
comes the flashing images of death itself
bloodied wrists and bullet holes a plenty
advertised like fashion statements
"wouldn't you love to go there?
ocean-filled lungs and necks like snakes
"my dear, you will be better off"
a thought so tempting
almost unbaringly so
but only in the moment
overwhelming me, filling me to the brim
fear breaching the surface of my skin
"I promise you there's palm tree silhouettes in the sunset
and warm sand between your toes"
knowing just how to manipulate my fragile mind
wringing like a kitchen sponge
until there's nothing left
"this luxury is absolutely free"
disgusting and clever all the same
but I'm afraid I must politely decline
my very own little trip to paradise

but wider grows the grin
there's nowhere else to go
