The Little Things.

Little boy with little fingers,
Tiny toes and a raging temper.
You hold my heart in sticky hands,
You play with the strings and throw it with a scream.
Anything in your grasp finds its way to your mouth,
It's the little things we take pleasure in.
The little hugs and the massive tantrums,
And all the in betweens, I will remember.
A mother's love knows no bounds,
When you're inconsolable and intolerable.
I wrap you in my arms and hum your favorite lullaby.
You are my sunshine, my only sunshine.
Your wails of sleeplessness become coos of happiness, your eyes flutter and shut.
Momma's here, momma's got you,
I whisper with your head upon my chest.
Little butt in my palm.
I hold my precious child and think.
Great things come in small packages.
Mother and child hold a special connection,
A bond that can not be seen but can be felt.
See you're the greatest thing I ever did,
All your laughter and happiness,
All your frustrating disasters,
They amount to my biggest achievement,
A handsome little man with tiny fingers in mine,
I realize there's simply not enough time.
Every day you grow a little bit more,
And one day you'll be leaving home.
Why do we set ourselves up for such heartbreak?
Why do we allow ourselves this attachment when we know the outcome? It's a fatal attraction.
The endless crappy diapers,
the mystery gunk in his hair,
the half full bottle he stowed away last week that i found while cleaning under his crib,
smells like rotted cottage cheese.
The beautiful smile upon his drool covered face,
the solid toy he throws at mine, that's just fine.
He does this all the time. He'll grow out of it is just a line we mother use when we can't explain why.
He's a boy is not an acceptable reason for him to rip off his diaper and piss everywhere.
Sure in time we will all laugh about it,
but what about me when I'm down on my knees scrubbing the carpet,
I won't laugh about that later.
I'll remember the pain in my body, and the joy in your laughter.
Because there is no greater happiness than when he screams momma and plants a wet kiss on my cheek.
These are the moments frozen in time,
As a constant reminder that you did something wonderful with your life.
