Keep Trying

Stripped down, bare
We are what we are
But it's not enough
When we don't fit in
with the expectations of society

When we take one wrong step
that goes against what isn't staring back at us through the mirror

We shouldn't have to apologize
for being human
for being different
for our very own opinions

There is already so much hate
fueling rage wars
and armageddon

that the punch you just threw
and that comment you just made
in the name of trying to make things better
just put you in the same league
of those that you proclaim to despise

We don't all have to agree
or get along

but

The world would be much better
if we all just accepted each other
if we could all just be okay with the fact
that we aren't clones of our brothers
of our sisters and our mothers

And our fathers didn't ask
for peace on earth
just understanding

that we can have our own faiths
that we can say what we want
and not be condemned

For if there really is a heaven
and there really is a hell
and the all forgiving force that you pray to
with words that fall on deaf ears
subconsciously you reach inside yourself
and find the strength you've been searching for
along with the answers you didn't know you had

It's okay to be scared
It's okay to cry
To be alone
To be lost

We are all human
We are all just trying our best
