Winter Song

Winter, I have decided, reminds me of you,
It is gentle but forceful, it will not yield to an argument, it is immutable as you are immutable,
but also hushed, & also lovely.

I have watched the snow make soft every jagged corner of the landscape,
& life creeps into silent delves, everything thrumming with the promise of some great explosion,
but for now it is silent, & for now, it is still.

Standing in the muted scene, I have the horrible urge to sink my teeth into it.
With every breath, I release a specter of myself, which hang like question marks, which hang like mistletoe.

& you are some distance from me, I know,
but with the moon shining down, soft & white & hushed,
You are here, also.

The sun will rise, the frost will turn to champagne froth on limbs
& whatever dreams were held in night, disperse
but for now, I am breathing ghosts & love,
& for now, my cold bones are warm.
