Our Last Moment

I'm following the path you told me to take,
Listening to waking birds warble in high boughs
As I step on fallen needles sprawled in my wake.
The chill mist covers the wood like a blanket as
Golden rays of of sun shyly peek through
The trunks of ancient evergreen trees.
I stop by the elm where two names are inscribed
And hear you approach, singing our sweet song.

You come into view, my heart's butterflies now.
The hood of your brown coat hides your sunset hair.
Jade eyes leave the clouds to settle on my frame.
The footsteps halt in front of me, with a bittersweet smile
You reach out, handing me a newspaper from Eden.
I know what it means, I’ve only got one question:
“How much time do we have left?”
You open your mouth, there's pain etched on your face
You choke on your words and say, ”Just today.”
It’s a knife in my chest, I can't help it, my features fall
And then I can taste the briny tears that roll down your flushed cheeks.

I now stand, trapped in a trance,
watching your mother’s car speeds off
faster than a thief in the night,
Wondering when I’ll get to see you again.
