Mom, P.S. I Love You

I hold the ropes of my swing with tight little fists.
Upwards I swing, my legs dancing with the wind.
"Any higher and you'll fly away", she says.
As she pushes me again, I kick the air with all my might,
racing towards new heights.

I bound down the stairs in my new outfit, teeth barely brushed.
Excitement the twin flames burning in my eyes,
I'm in too much of a rush that when I grab my backpack
I do not notice the filled lunch box just put inside;
Tuna sandwich, no crust, strawberries with a sprinkling of sugar.
She runs to the door as I am running out of it
"Have a wonderful day at school she yells at my retreating frame,
and remember I love you".
My mind is already buzzing with the day ahead,
I forget to look back.

Nervously fixing my hair and applying my lip gloss,
I continue to check myself in the mirror.
My date arrives and I yell up the stairs "Bye mom".
When I arrive back home late in the night
I am greeted by her as she cleans the dishes.
"You look beautiful" she says and asks "how was your date?",
but I already am bounding up the stairs to tell my friends.
What I had not noticed was her tired eyes,
as she had stayed up all night just to ask that question.

Bustling along with my cart full of dorm supplies,
she and I finally arrive at my room.
We set everything up and as I put the final touch on my bed,
I turn around to say goodbye
She looks at me with tears welling in her eyes
and I finally stop and notice all the small things I just missed
Her hair is thinning and so is she,
Slightly out of breath she heads for the door.

I run to her and as I give her hug I whisper "I love you mom,
thank you for all you've done"
She smiles at me
a tear finally escaping as she whispers
"It was my pleasure"
