As If I Were a Dog

I feel like a caged dog,
Let out only when you feel like playing.
Locked up when I've been bad,
Even though I was only
Begging for your attention.
If I speak,
You don't listen,
Just repeat the same words
Over and over again.
"You're adorable" you'll tell me,
As if I'm just some puppy
There to fawn over
At your convenience.
I feel as if I am trapped,
No longer any free will of my own.
You tell me to stay and I do,
Call my name
And I come running in a second.
I'm trained;
After three years
I know exactly what's expected.
I cuddle up to you close
As you watch your videos
Like some kind of lapdog
And wait for your attention.
I paw at your chest,
Wondering if you'll
Acknowledge my existence.
You never do.
I guess it's time
For me to move on,
Knowing I'll never be
Anything more
Than an abandoned dog;
Even pets get treated better
Than I do.
