Cage

Laying Awake
I feel the steel
Towering looming twisting and still
This cage inside me
Built from the many memories
Of my years begotten.
It’s hard to love
When you’ve locked it away.
It’s hard to feel when you’ve trapped
Every essence of the thrill.
This cage isn’t heavy
It is light, almost weightless
Until you think about the loneliness
And the edges that beg to be eroded.
How much heart ache can one take
Till their cage appears?
