My Modern Christmas

The season approaches, just around the bend
And fills my heart with joy
Except for the money I must spend
For my acquainted girls and boys

The tree is up
Star on the leaves like a crown
I drink with marshmallows in my hot cup
The chocolate drink I completely down

My school is filled with posters with Rudolph
And about the birth of our Lord
But the fact we get eighteen days off
Is what really twangs my cord

The fake cherries and plastic mistletoe
And the shiny ornamental balls
That my dogs throw to and fro
And on which my grandmother falls

Last minute gifts
Are my family's specialty
I ask my mother for a lift
To buy sketchbooks and off-brand Harry Potter tees

Carolers are nowhere to be seen
'Cause who's got time for that
We aren't perfect-note-hitting machines
And our instruments sound like dying cats

But Christmas is a time for family
Respect and love never conditional
And there's nowhere else I'd rather be
Also, there's a feast at the festival
