The Mission of an Angel

I call upon you Calliope
Muse of epic poems
To tell the tale of Gabriel without old tropes
Your gift unto me, please bestow

The hero of our story's dead
But don't let that deter you
It will not be filled with dread
For he has a task to do

It is important and is a crucial tie
Well, not really though
But the stakes are high
The odds of returning low

See, he was an angel
Died at age fifteen
Of reasons I cannot tell
Though it was tragic, indeed

At least he got to paradise
On the escalator up
And spent his days playing D&D, (complete with dice)
His rewards were enough

So he lived a peaceful death
Until Jesus called all angels
For a big announcement
And Gabriel nearly let out a breath

The Mission was given in the last thousand or so years
And it was rather grave
The lost were grieved with tears
As they went down to Satan's cave

It was to retrieve
Ten of the most lost souls
And if you do not leave
Satan will stone you and them with his coals

Some of the Angels
Had gotten staked and impaled
But they were afraid of if they fell
And if the Mission was failed

Gabriel raised his hand
With fear deep inside
"I'll do it, Son of Man."
With those words, he wished to run and hide

Then the Prince of Heaven boomed
"What a brave young man!"
So Gabriel McCauley locked himself in his tomb
And was to be sent down to the Earth's land

The others escorted him to a floating island
With lots of trees and grass
A young man walked in as Earth Class began
And Gabriel mustered up his balls of brass

"So, your name is Gabriel
The to-be hero of ten Lost Ones
Well, you get to go back to Earth
So you can go and have some fun!

"Though, you might have to wait
On the trip to DisneyLand
Because you're getting a crash course, which isn't too great
If you're waiting to get a spray tan

"I'll be teaching you
Normal human behaviors
Because, hey, when you're in the loo
You don't want anyone to notice you're immortal

"My name's Nathaniel Lester
And I'll be your guide
So you can be a normal guy
And have the odds on your side"

He taught Gabriel about Nintendo games
For Gabriel died in 1821
Nathaniel told him what was in or lame
So that was the Gaming Unit done

There was the Music Unit
Which really wasn't enjoyable
The trashy pop made Gabriel not want to do it
So in Soft Rock they dabbled

Nathaniel said in envy
That he wished he had Gabriel's chance
The younger Angel was confusion to a T
As to banjos they danced

Weren't Angels supposed to never be jealous
But Gabriel brushed the remark off as
Nathaniel enjoying the perilous
And truthfully, he'd gladly give the blonde his task
