Nursery Rhymes

Twinkle, twinkle, little star...
Innocence. Child’s play.
What I wouldn’t give to go back to the days
of nursery rhymes and broken crayons.
To care more for recess and games,
than for love and lies.
How I wonder what you are...
Where did they go, those times
when five minutes made you a friend for life
and indiscretions were forgiven with the smallest smile?
When did life get so complicated
that heartbreak and tears are overlooked,
instead of healed with a kiss?
Up above the world so high...
Fitting in has become the everyday, the expected:
keep your head down, don’t draw attention
But be unique. Don’t follow the herd.
Stay cool, composed, collected, outside the flames, don’t lose your temper
But shame on you if you never feel passion,
and pity the fool who never knows a lover’s touch.
Like a diamond in the sky...
Plug your ears the older you get.
Don’t listen to their lies, their cries,
their sighs of jealousy at your freedom.
Wander safely in the knowledge that they cannot take your spirit
if they cannot have your mind.
