Don't You Understand

Don't you understand life doesn't work that way.
Don't you understand I don't like you in that way.
Don't you understand that you're my best friend.
Don't you understand that's all I'll ever feel.

You've been there through the years.
All those tears that I cried.
But don't you understand I craved attention for love.
The love of a friend.

I imagine us laughing in the middle of summer.
Singing along to happy tunes.
And then I imagine we part our ways.
To our seperate lifes, our seperate homes.

I know this seems harsh,
But I need you to understand,
Because I need my best friend back,
My anchor, my heart.
Because even though I can't give you my soul.
I need you along for the ride.
