A Hero, They Call Me

A hero, they call me
If only they could really see
All of the things I've done
Just me and this gun
I did it all for a country I love
I send my prayers, to those above
To those I did harm
I did what they taught me on that volatile farm
Never thought for myself, I was just a clone
Now all the regrets stick with me, right down to the bone
I took someone's father away from them, left them to cry
Remaining stoic, not showing emotion, I left them to ask me, "why?"

A hero, they call me
If only they could really see
I am not a human, I am solely a killer
I sent many to the mass grave, it's marked by that pillar
I murdered a young woman the other day
I didn't want to, I begged her to get out of the way
She refused to move, she stood her ground
My comrades urging me on, from all around
Forced to open fire, the bullets sliced through her
One of the soldiers clapped me on the back, saying, "Good job, sir"
Barely nodding my head, I looked at the body that lay
In her hand, she held a white flag, I turned away
A white flag of surrender, I killed the wrong one
She wasn't an enemy, she was the only one who wanted peace, now there are none
Our mission was over though and I shuddered in disgust
I had to keep my head high because it was in me they put their trust

A hero, they call me
If only they could really see
I laid down my arms and let the flag collect dust
I will never hurt another, I'll deal with the consequences, if I must
I have seen the world, seen more than I wanted to
Wish I could erase these memories, but there's nothing I can do
Forever I will see their faces
Perfect masks of fear and terror, they have gaps in their families, empty spaces
It was all by my doing and I wish I could take it back
I didn't deserve to take away what they now lack
My country is proud of me
A hero, they call me
If only they could really see
A hero, is not me
