This Is a Photograph of Me

This is something that I wrote for my Writer's Craft class (an english writing class) that I enjoyed a lot. It was an assignment derived from a Margaret Atwood and Susan Musgrave poem. Figured it wouldn't hurt too much to share it. Yes, I realize it needs a little work, but...meh...lol.

This Is a Photograph of Me

I found this photograph
tucked away
Its brilliant orange hues
hidden among dusty books
Touches of amber devoured by dark leather covers

The turbulence of life
calmed but for a moment
The surf no longer crashing
but softly lapping against the grainy sand

Toes buried into frigid, coarse depths
with the last of the dying light caressing wind-blown hair
A gentle sigh
echoed by the whispers of secrets in the trees
Heard but not seen
Felt but not known

A shattered heart
seen only in the gloomy depths of the lake
where the golden glow cannot reach
A relationship setting
Just like the sun
slipping behind the hills in the far distance

Glancing up
the jumble of puffy clouds
reflect the confusion in my mind
The faint tinges of burnt umber along their edges
remind me of my silver lining:

You may be gone
But I’m better off without you

So the solitary figure seated at the edge of the shoreline
suggests not loneliness
But strength and independence
with a soul well on its way to healing

Because like the setting sun
we are over
Yet with the knowledge of the coming dawn
I can contemplate our ending
in the silent peace of dusk
