Ranting At A Dark And Godless Universe

America has ten amendments.
America knows none of them.
America says "America"
and there is no Canada, there is no Mexico,
no Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama,
no Colombia, Brazil, Chile, Argentina.
America says "America"
and there is nothing else.

America is history textbooks full of nothing.
America is sixty thousand dead by 1987.
It is every man whose salary is one-third again that of his female co-worker.
It is forty-three million without health insurance.
It is schoolchildren associating exclusively with their own race.
It is poverty perpetuating itself over generations
and it does not understand or care.

America is dreams that are never realized.
America wants free speech--if America agrees with you.
America wants no taxes; America wants better public services.
America wants the wealth to stay with the rich.
America knows it ought to go to the poor.
America is afraid of the educated.
America forgets its past; America wonders why this has never happened before.
America says no consequences, stumbling blinkered through D.C.

America's patriotism is invoked by the TV
and becomes nationalism.
America calls itself "opportunity."
America is trickle-down economics;
America clings to the rich-poor gap like a favorite blanket
and tells the poor, "it's your own fault."
America scorns the entire world
whether or not they may be right.
America is the status quo (damn the torpedoes, all engines halt!)
America is empty rhetoric
and America will not hear of it.
