Always been a good boy
But never been first rate
He said love I’ve got to go
I wanna go out and do something great
He said I should have told you before
But I’ve joined up to fight in the war
She said fighting to stop the fighting
Babe it ain’t really that great
I’m pregnant with you child
You can’t leave me in this state
He said I love my town and I gotta show it
I’ll be back before you know it
Smile little soldier
Smile through the pain
Smile for the sunny days
And smile through the rain
Dream of day you’ll go home to your wife
But right now you gotta fight, fight for your life
He spends his days battling
And the times when he’s not fightin
He’s sitting at his laptop
To his wife he’s writing
I miss you, and I know i’m comin’ back some day
But I’ve just been told, I’ve got an extended stay
I’ve been fightin her for ages, gotta keep my head up high
The very next day, his wife sends back her reply
He gets it on bright and early at dawn
It says while you’ve been away, your baby son was born
He can’t hold back the tears in his eyes
As he reads the heart felt letter, that little soldier cries

Smile for the sunny days
And smile through the rain
Dream of day you’ll go home to your wife
But right now you gotta fight, fight for your life
Back at home he’s son is growing fine
But its been months since his wife’s heard a sign
She’s hoping he doesn’t forget her
One day she gets a letter
That little soldier had fallen in war
If only he stayed home, he’d be there ever more
Now he’s up in heaven, lookin down on her
For the first time, seeing the son he never saw
He regrets going into battle
Regrets having a son, he knows he can’t adore
Looks at his wife, wishes he could hold her
But he had to be the bravest little soldier…
